Why standard gutters underperform here
The North Shore mountains push incoming weather systems up, which wrings more rain out of them than falls on much of the rest of the region. A gutter and downspout system sized to a general standard rather than to that local rainfall volume is often simply too small, and it will overflow at the corners and low points during heavier storms even when it is perfectly clean.
We see this most on older homes where the gutter system has never been reassessed since it was first installed, sometimes decades ago, under a different set of assumptions about how much water it would ever need to move.
Where overflow does the damage
Overflow at a corner or a poorly pitched section runs down the fascia board behind the gutter rather than into the downspout, and that is where rot starts. By the time the fascia is visibly damaged, water has usually been running down it for more than one wet season. We check gutter pitch, downspout sizing, and the condition of the fascia behind the gutter as part of any gutter inspection, since fixing the gutter without addressing rotted fascia behind it just repeats the problem.

Properties under heavy tree cover, which describes a large share of North Shore lots, deal with needles, cones, and leaf litter clogging gutters far more than open lots do. A clogged gutter backs water up under the shingle edge rather than carrying it away, which causes damage at the roof edge even before the gutter itself overflows visibly.
Upsizing and repositioning downspouts
On roofs where the existing gutter system is genuinely undersized for the water volume it collects, we look at upsizing the gutter profile, adding downspouts at points where a single one was carrying more roof area than it should, and repositioning outlets so heavy flow during a storm goes somewhere the property can actually handle rather than pooling against a foundation.
